Our story
We are sisters, best friends, and dentists. We come from a family where osteoporosis is very prevalent.
We had no idea we would have had osteoporosis before even hitting menopause.
When I turned 40, I had my first Dexa Scan. I had to ask my doctor to prescribe the scan for me because it is not routine to get a dexa at that age. My first scan showed osteopenia. I was shocked because I played competitive tennis through college, and maintained lifting weights and plyometric training multiple times a week since college. My husband and I go on numerous 4 mile walks a week. I was already doing all of things they tell you to do when you're diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis to help increase bone density.
When I turned 43, my second dexa showed I moved from osteopenia to osteoporosis. I was shocked and sad. I was told to see an endocrinologist, but I knew I didn't want to go on medications for osteoporosis. My mom had osteoporosis since she was 50, and was on a different medication every couple of years to treat it. I watched as she had to deal with the side effects of the medications, including choking easily. And to be honest, her bone density never actually improved. But she kept going on medications with the hopes that her bone density wouldn't get worse (which it still did slowly over the years). I knew I didn't want to go down that medication path.
I started researching options to increase bone density in a natural and healthy way. I came across the research for osteogenic loading and was impressed with the increase in bone density people were getting through osteogenic loading. I did osteogenic loading for a year and didn't add any supplements or make any lifestyle changes because I wanted to see if really worked like the studies showed.
"What is it that you said you were going to do to help with osteoporosis? I've never seen results and improvement like this is a year. Your lumbar improved 8% and your hip 12.1%."
I was thrilled after that call with my doctor, and it was then that I knew osteogenic loading was a hidden gem. My sister and I talked for hours about it and knew immediately we wanted to start a business so other women and men could have access to this amazing, no medication option to help increase bone density. That is how OsteoZone was born!
